New sub-areas have emerged recently next to linguistic fields, which are mostly influenced by digital technology, multilingual classrooms, and attention to the emotional and social learning experience of learners. The current paper aims at exploring ten emerging areas: Generative AI and large language models, Translanguaging pedagogy, Informal digital learning of English, Data-driven learning, positive psychology in SLA, Machine translation literacy, Multimodal literacies, Ecolinguistics, Linguistic landscape studies, and Critical language awareness/Raciolinguistics. The study concluded that the ten areas indicate that applied linguistics is becoming interdisciplinary in its development. Digital technologies link language teaching and learning with computational systems, multilingualism links language pedagogy with research in sociolinguistics and identity, positive psychology links language learning with emotion research, and ecological and critical approaches link language learning with other social issues.
