Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is considered a transdiagnostic process that predicts and sustains emotional disorders. Therefore, valid instruments are necessary to measure this construct. This study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire (PTQ) in a sample of 756 Mexican adults. Due to the lack of consensus on the factor structure of this instrument, both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted. Evidence supporting the unidimensional structure of the instrument was found, and this structure was shown to be invariant across demographic and clinical variables. The PTQ demonstrated excellent internal consistency and showed evidence of convergent validity with emotional symptoms, psychological inflexibility, life satisfaction, and environmental reward. Additionally, evidence of discriminant validity was provided concerning emotional symptoms and psychological inflexibility. These findings suggest that the PTQ is a valid and reliable measure of RNT in Mexican adults, with important implications for both research and clinical practice.
