God is greater / Death to America / Death to Israel / Curse upon the Jews / Victory to Islam is the emblematic slogan of Yemen’s Zaydi-Islamist Ansar Allah (Houthi) movement. First articulated in 2002, parts of this slogan have been successively elaborated and recalibrated by the movement in response to shifting domestic, regional, and global contexts. These adjustments reflect the Ansar Allah’s capacity to manage the meaning of an otherwise immutable, central component of its ideology in light of political and religious exigencies. Five overlapping yet historically situated phases emerge in which Ansar Allah renegotiated questions of legitimacy, religious propriety, and pan-Islamic ambition through interpretive calibration rather than textual change. Functioning as a centrally controlled yet adaptive ideological mechanism, this hermeneutic agency enables the movement to navigate contentious times by combining textual immutability with interpretive management, maintaining ideological fidelity to its founder while responding to evolving political demands.
