In this paper, a Computer-Aided Tactile Inspection Planning system (CATIP) has been developed. It overcomes the main problems encountered in previous inspection planning systems. A novel and robust accessibility analysis method was developed. Alternate solutions for the clustering and sequencing of the measurement points are obtained based on a new optimization algorithm. The shortest collision-free probing path is generated automatically. However, the user may interact with and modify intermediate results, and examine the effects on the overall inspection plan. The system has been validated by simulation as well as tested using several examples. The optimization strategy adopted throughout the different steps of the planning allows the generation of time/cost-efficient inspection plans with alternative solutions.
