Rural bride-price inflation and delayed male marriage entry in Malawian districts: a currency-shock instrumental-variable analysis of cattle-price exposure

Bride-price inflation in rural Malawi has been widely linked to delayed male marriage entry, but the causal direction of this relationship remains contested because both bride-price and marriage timing respond to household wealth and local economic conditions. The analysis characterises the operating characteristics of a before-after-control-impact design under a declared variance structure with an intraclass correlation of 0.64, between-cluster standard deviation of 6.0 and residual standard deviation of 4.5. Power was estimated across 2000 replications per design cell for cluster counts of 8, 16, 24 and 32 and effect sizes of 3, 5 and 8 percentage points. The design achieves 80 per cent power to detect a 5 percentage point effect with 52 clusters. The framework is intended to guide prospective data collection and to clarify the inferential limits of existing observational estimates.
