This systematic review examines advances in economic dispatch (ED) and demand-side management (DSM) in power systems with wind and photovoltaic (PV) generation. Peer-reviewed journal articles published from 2018 to 2024 were identified through systematic searches of Scopus and the Web of Science Core Collection. This review focuses on wind and PV generation due to the challenges their variability and forecast uncertainty pose for power balancing and operational scheduling. ED coordinates generation-side resources to reduce operating costs and emissions, while DSM adjusts the timing and magnitude of electricity demand to provide complementary flexibility. Therefore, the review classifies conventional optimization and artificial intelligence methods, evaluates their reported performance and practical limitations, and identifies research directions for coordinating generation-side dispatch with demand-side flexibility in renewable power systems.
