We present a one-dimensional chain toy model that provides insights into the lattice dynamics of complex crystalline materials such as intermetallic clathrates. The model, which is analogous to those commonly used to introduce lattice dynamics in introductory solid-state physics, illustrates the so-called avoided crossing in the acoustic phonon branches that is associated with low-energy vibrations of weakly bound “guest” atoms in such guest–host materials. The example demonstrates how toy models can also be applied to qualitatively explore the essential features of more complex materials of interest in contemporary condensed matter research. Animations of atomic displacement patterns for the model are included.
