Evidence‐based, personalized, safe, and efficient interprofessional care are cornerstones of hospital medicine. Hospitalists are uniquely positioned to conduct the research and improvement needed to identify opportunities for better care. However, this requires expertise that is gained through focused training. The Department of Veterans Affairs has long been a leader in clinician training and has several programs that provide training in research and improvement. These programs allow hospitalists to gain skills and expertise for career development and advancement. Encouraging early career hospitalists to pursue such training is essential to strengthening the field and making hospital care safer, more effective, and efficient.
