Muscle fatigue is a common condition following intensive physical activity, and the back muscles are particularly susceptible due to their role in postural stability and various sporting movements. Sport massage is one approach frequently used to support recovery, with effleurage and petrissage as two commonly applied basic techniques. This article was developed through a literature review method aimed at theoretically analyzing the extent to which these two techniques may support the reduction of muscle fatigue, particularly in the back muscles, based on findings from prior studies published between 2020 and 2026. The literature search was conducted through Google Scholar, SINTA, DOAJ, PubMed, and Crossref using keywords related to effleurage, petrissage, sport massage, and muscle fatigue. The review indicates that effleurage tends to contribute to initial relaxation and improved blood circulation, while petrissage is more closely associated with releasing deep tissue tension and reducing post-exercise muscle soreness. Mechanical massage applied to the back muscles shows a similar tendency, although its mechanism is not entirely identical to manual manipulation. It can be concluded that effleurage and petrissage have the potential to serve as part of a back-muscle recovery strategy, although experimental studies specifically examining their combination remain limited.
