Mediastinal radiation for Hodgkin lymphoma is linked to effusive-constrictive pericardial disease decades after treatment.
Why the study?
The late appearance of chronic pericardial disease after mediastinal radiation for Hodgkin lymphoma had previously been reported no more than 10 years after radiation.
Case Report (n=2)
No
May warrant vigilance for pericardial disease >20 years after mediastinal radiation; extends known latency but remains hypothesis-generating from case reports.

The late appearance of chronic pericardial disease has been reported, but no more than 10 years after radiation [2, 3]. We report two cases of delayed chronic pericardial disease occurring 20 and 23 years, respectively, after treatment of Hodgkin lymphoma.Case 1: A 45-year-old woman with Hodgkin lymphoma who had been treated with mediastinal radiation 23 years previously presented with exertional dyspnea that had lasted 2 months, leg edema, and a transudative pleural effusion. Gregory C. Kane (1996) conducted a case report in Delayed effusive-constrictive pericarditis after radiation for Hodgkin lymphoma (n=2). Mediastinal radiation therapy was evaluated on Delayed chronic effusive-constrictive pericardial disease. Mediastinal radiation for Hodgkin lymphoma was associated with delayed chronic effusive-constrictive pericardial disease appearing 20 and 23 years after treatment in 2 reported cases.
