Shadowing has become an increasingly popular research method in educational research. Despite its growing popularity, there is currently no uniform understanding or systematic methodological elaboration of shadowing. To fill this gap, this article aims to establish an initial methodological basis for shadowing. To this end, a definition of shadowing as an ethnographic research strategy within a qualitative paradigm is developed and presented, along with a methodological basis for shadowing based on maxims of ethnography. Subsequently, a five-step model for implementing shadowing is introduced, including tips and recommendations based on key literature and the author's own research experience. Finally, special emphasis is placed on the ethical implications and aspects of shadowing as an immersive research method. The article concludes with an outlook and implications for further methodological discussion.
