The speed control of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) is addressed in this article through an approach grounded in the model predictive control (MPC) strategy with a finite control set (FCS‐MPC). The optimization procedure of FCS‐MPC is notably simple and intuitive. As a result, FCS‐MPC finds growing application in the control of electrical drive systems. The core of the proposed strategy is a cascaded control structure, where an inner FCS‐MPC current control loop is combined with an outer velocity Sliding Mode Control (SMC) loop. Given their widespread industrial use, PMSMs frequently employ FCS‐MPC for current control. This is attributed to its fast dynamic characteristics, inherent constraint‐handling capabilities, and the possible removal of a dedicated modulator. Moreover, SMC has gained traction as a highly effective approach for PMSM velocity control, primarily because of its strong resilience to both model uncertainties and disturbances. Compared to the conventional PI cascaded control typically employed by Whirlpool in domestic appliances, the proposed approach has shown a significant enhancement in control performance and robustness.
