This paper presents a multicriteria classification of acoustic path geometries in multipath ultrasonic flowmeters. The classification distinguishes spatial arrangement, acoustic trajectory, path position, inclination angle, and number of paths. Particular attention is given to the potential of different path arrangements to distinguish flow-profile nonuniformities. Multiplane configurations employing different inclination angles and equal acoustic path lengths are considered as a geometric subclass. The information content of a configuration depends not only on path count but also on the spatial independence of the measurements. The proposed classification is qualitative; any metrological advantages of specific configurations require CFD analysis and experimental validation.
