Chronic ultraviolet (UV) exposure causes clinical and structural alterations collectively termed photodamage, presenting an established risk factor for keratinocyte carcinoma (Baillie et al, 2011). Histologically, this is characterized by solar elastosis caused by UV-induced accumulation of elastotic material in the superficial to mid-dermis (Braverman et al, 1982). The extent of solar elastosis correlates with cumulative UV exposure and represents the histological reference standard for quantifying chronic photodamage (Baillie et al, 2011).
