Willdenow’s herbarium in Berlin and Sprengel’s Apiaceae collection in Vienna hold some little-known types of plants collected by Hoffmannsegg and Link in Portugal at the end of the 18 th century. By studying this material and associated literature, we demonstrate that the name Ferula capillaris , later recombined in Ferulago , has been misapplied for almost 200 years, since it should be regarded as a synonym of Prangos trifida . The species of Ferulago sect. Galbanifera , now Lophosciadium , that was erroneously linked to Ferula capillaris agrees with the types of the long-forgotten Peucedanum rupestre and Peucedanum lusitanicum , which are here lectotypified. Lophosciadium rupestre comb. nov . solves the convoluted taxonomic and nomenclatural history of this species endemic to the Northwest and Centre-West of the Iberian Peninsula.
