... The US Census Bureau has proposed a new set of rules that would exclude undocumented immigrants and those without permanent legal status (a.k.a. a green card) from the data it collects in the next census in 2030. There are an estimated 16 million immigrants in the US without permanent legal status, according to a 2025 study published by Pew, based on Census Bureau data (tinyurl.com/5n7fk56e). The proposal marks President Trump’s second attempt to change Census rules. In 2019, before the end of his first term, he sought to include a citizenship question in the 2020 census – this plan was eventually blocked by the US Supreme Court, and then dropped by the Biden administration. Conducted decennially, the US Census is mandated to count the “whole number of persons” in each state, regardless of citizenship or immigration status, as enshrined in the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution. The count only excludes foreign tourists and business travellers.
