Generative artificial intelligence is becoming both relational and agentic. AI boyfriends are treated as a visible romantic exemplar within the broader theoretical and empirical domain of relational AI. This paper examines whether relational AI, including AI boyfriends, is emerging alongside AI-assisted commerce, and whether functional integration keeps pace with attention and market growth. Study 1 analyzes Google Trends data (2020–2026, six markets): relational-AI attention rises significantly in five countries, AI-commerce attention rises in all six, with substantial but non-invariant temporal co-movement in attention. Study 2 examines 44 AI-companion apps on Google Play: the category shows substantial downloads and spending, romantic positioning (e.g., AI boyfriends) shows no observable adoption penalty, in-app purchasing is universal, yet no app positions shopping as a core feature. Study 3 analyzes 181,226 Reddit posts from relational-AI communities: design-weighted coding estimates 9.1% of corpus posts contain commercial discourse, but only 0.3% involve the companion itself in consumer or purchasing decisions. We conceptualize this as an attention-market-integration gap, where attention and market realization outpace functional commerce integration. The study equips managers and researchers with guidance for engaging with the emerging AI boyfriend trend.
