Background and Aim: Homogeneous reporting of patient and treatment characteristics is essential for effective communication and collaboration among healthcare professionals. The aim of this educational paper was to summarize current recommendations for reporting patients with intestinal failure. Methods: Relevant guidelines and position papers published by the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN), together with other pertinent documents, were reviewed. Results: The definitions and classifications of intestinal failure, the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying intestinal failure, the severity of chronic intestinal failure, and home parenteral nutrition therapy are described. In addition, a table has been developed to facilitate standardized reporting of patients with chronic intestinal failure receiving home parenteral nutrition. Conclusion: The use of standardized definitions and classifications for diseases and therapies is essential to ensure accurate communication, facilitate meaningful comparisons of outcomes, and promote consistency across clinical practice and research.
