The hydrolysis reaction of Be(H2O)2+4 in concentrated solution has been followed using 1H and 9Be n.m.r. spectroscopy, the former at reduced temperature. The existence of two species in addition to Be(H2O)2+4 is demonstrated and intensity measurements are shown to be in accord with the formulations of the species [Be2(OH)]3+ and (BeOH)3+3 currently preferred on the basis of electrometric studies. The beryllium ion remains in an essentially regular tetrahedral environment in all the species observed.
