Transcatheter mitral valve repair decreases mitral regurgitation severity, improves quality of life, and provides better long-term outcomes than medical therapy alone in high-risk surgical patients.
Why the study?
The prevalence of degenerative mitral regurgitation is increasing among older patients with comorbidities who are at high risk for conventional surgical intervention, prompting the development of minimally invasive transcatheter mitral valve repair techniques.
Does Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair (TMVr) improve mitral regurgitation severity, quality of life, and long-term outcomes compared to medical treatment alone in surgically high-risk patients with Degenerative Mitral Regurgitation (DMR)?
Does Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair (TMVr) improve mitral regurgitation severity, quality of life, and long-term outcomes compared to medical treatment alone in surgically high-risk patients with Degenerative Mitral Regurgitation (DMR)?
This review highlights that transcatheter mitral valve repair offers a minimally-invasive option for surgically high-risk patients with degenerative mitral regurgitation that decreases mitral regurgitation severity, improves quality of life, and provides better long-term outcomes than medical treatment alone.
The prevalence of Degenerative Mitral Regurgitation (DMR) has been increasing globally over the recent decades. It is a disorder that predominantly affects the older generation, this generation however is also affected by many other comorbidities. As a result, they are classified as being too high-risk for the conventional treatment of DMR which is surgical intervention. In the past their treatment options were limited. However, with the development of Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair (TMVr) techniques this cohort of patients is able to receive interventions that are minimally-invasive. These interventions have been proven to decrease the severity of mitral regurgitation whilst also improving the patient’s quality of life. They are also associated with better long-term outcomes compared to patients receiving medical treatment alone. This review focuses on the role of Transcatheter Mitral Valve repair in the Treatment of degenerative mitral valve in surgically high-risk patients.

Sousa et al. (2026) conducted a review in Degenerative Mitral Regurgitation. Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair (TMVr) vs. Medical treatment alone was evaluated. Transcatheter mitral valve repair decreases mitral regurgitation severity, improves quality of life, and provides better long-term outcomes than medical therapy alone in high-risk surgical patients.
