This study addresses the concept of preservation in the field of Archival Science, starting from federal legislation and academic production on the subject. It comparatively analyzes the presence and uses of the term "preservation" in Brazilian archival legislation and academic production, seeking to identify continuities, shifts, and changes in how the topic is formulated over time. The research adopts a qualitative approach, of a basic nature, with a deductive method, articulating documentary and bibliographic research. Empirically, it involves the collection and analysis of legal provisions and scientific publications, organized into comparative tables and examined for their meanings, patterns of recurrence, and variations. It identifies a reorientation of the concept of preservation based on the context of imperatives related to digital preservation in Archival Science. Based on the survey of federal legislation and the mapping of scientific production, it concludes that there has been a reconfiguration in the archival field regarding the concept of preservation. Thus, there is a need for policies and structure for the effective implementation of digital preservation.
