Although the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming educational guidance and career counselling, its impact on quality and professionalism has not been sufficiently researched. This scoping review investigates how AI influences counselling methods and professional standards and analyses 20 publications (2015–2025) from two databases (ERIC and German Education Index) using a systematic micro-, meso-, and macro-level framework. Although research in this area has grown rapidly since 2022, concrete quality standards for AI-supported counselling remain elusive. While AI can simulate empathy and provide reflective prompts, it cannot replicate genuine human warmth or address complex biographical issues. Acknowledging AI’s potential to enhance accessibility, it only serves as an expansion of the repertoire rather than a replacement for human reflexivity. In order to safeguard professional integrity in the postdigital era, the study recommends implementing mandatory AI competencies and establishing a digital commons infrastructure to protect counselling values from commercial interests.
