“We treat beauty like an accomplishment, and that is insane. Everyone in LA says, “Oh you look good,” and you listen for them to say you’ve lost weight. It’s never “How are you?” or “You seem happy!” (Carrie Fisher, 2016). Although equality has come a long way in the entertainment industry, men and women are still held to different standards, both behind and in front of the camera. Women, especially actresses, can often feel easily replaceable and that they have little power in the machine of Hollywood. Driftwood Avenue explores a woman's place in the scandalous landscape of Hollywood filmmaking, and how some thrive in its chaos while others are left to drown. The story takes inspiration from both Sunset Boulevard (1950) and Mulholland Drive (2001) in its core themes and characters, focusing on how women in a particular era are treated in Hollywood, with this piece focusing on current day. As with most stories, Driftwood Avenue's main purpose is to entertain, but it will highlight the importance of sisterhood among women. After all, us women are stronger together.
