This article is in two discrete parts. It is an edited version of an unpublished lectura of Inferno XXXI given by the late Martin McLaughlin at the University of Notre Dame in 2013. The reading focuses on matters of structure, vocabulary, and metre, and pays particular attention to the representation of the giants with reference to their treatment in Genesis and in the classical epic. It opens with an Introduction dedicated to Martin’s contributions as a Dantist, followed by a description of the editorial criteria used in editing the text.
