Purpose Growing environmental challenges and shifting consumer choices amid the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDG) of “Responsible Consumption and Production” are convincing firms to adopt green manufacturing practices (GMPs). This research aims to identify, refine and establish the most significant determinants of GMPs. Furthermore, it explores their mutual interrelationship in terms of cause–effect variables. Design/methodology/approach The Fuzzy-DEMATEL approach was employed to achieve the above-stated objectives. Findings The researchers ascertained eleven most significant determinants of GMPs. Furthermore, they examined their respective and relative importance and influence and classified them into cause-effect determinants. The “regulatory expectations” and “competitiveness” emerged as the most influential cause and effect determinants, respectively. Research limitations/implications The study offers several implications for industry and academia. For instance, manufacturing firms in Oman may satisfy their most critical “need for resource conservation and value recovery” through resource utilization and recovery mechanisms that are inherent in GMPs. The consideration of Scopus-indexed publications only, experts' subjectivity, sector and spatial (Omani manufacturing context) restrictions mark the major limitations of this study. Originality/value Given the importance of national and global sustainability targets, this study attempts to offer a comprehensive list of contextually relevant GMPs determinants. Furthermore, in the Omani context, it is one of the first known attempts to study GMP determinants using the Fuzzy-DEMATEL technique.
