Key result
Fermented Parkia biglobosa seeds reduce systolic blood pressure by ~15 mmHg vs. control.
Why the study?
Non-pharmacological management of hypertension recommends fruit and vegetable consumption for their potassium and polyphenol richness, motivating an assessment of the effects of a fermented seeds of Parkia biglobosa (FSPb) based diet on blood pressure.
Does a daily dietary regime of 5 g of fermented seeds of Parkia biglobosa reduce systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate in sedentary Black African adults with high-normal or elevated blood pressure?

Does a daily dietary regime of 5 g of fermented seeds of Parkia biglobosa reduce systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate in sedentary Black African adults with high-normal or elevated blood pressure?
In this pilot open-label randomized trial, daily dietary supplementation with 5 g of fermented seeds of Parkia biglobosa significantly reduced systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate in sedentary sub-Saharan African adults with elevated blood pressure.
Supports dietary use of fermented Parkia biglobosa seeds as BP adjunct in sub-Saharan adults; extends RCT evidence on traditional foods for hypertension.
It is known that management of hypertension includes pharmacological and non-pharmacological measures. The latter recommends fruit and vegetable consumption due to their potassium and polyphenol richness. We assessed the effects of Fermented Seeds of Parkia biglobosa (FSPb) based diet on Blood Pressure (BP).Sixty-five adults were enrolled in a randomized, open-label, parallel-group clinical trial [Group 1 (G1), n = 33; Group 2 (G2), n = 32].Participants were followed during 112 days in three steps: pre-intervention (Day 0 to 28), intervention (Day 29 to 84 for G1; Day 57 to 84 for G2) and post-intervention (Day 85 to 112).Intervention consisted of a daily dietary regime of 5g of FSPb.BP and heart rate (HR) were assessed at Day 0, 28, 56, 84, and 112.The outcome measures were systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP) and HR.Compared with baseline values, significant decreases in SBP, DBP and HR were observed in both groups after short (28 days for G1 and G2) or medium (56 days for G1) duration intake of FSPb.Due to their content of various bioactive compounds, potassium and magnesium, FSPb may have beneficial effects on BP and HR in humans.

Brou et al. (2026) conducted an RCT in Hypertension or high normal blood pressure (n=65). Fermented seeds of Parkia biglobosa (FSPb) powder vs. No FSPb consumption (delayed intervention control during days 29-56) was evaluated on Systolic blood pressure (mmHg) at Day 56 (after 28 days of intervention in Group 1 vs no intervention in Group 2) (MD -14.92 mmHg, 95% CI -24.56, -5.29, p=0.002). Fermented Parkia biglobosa seeds (5 g/day) significantly reduced systolic blood pressure after 28 days compared with no consumption (MD -14.92 mmHg, p=0.002).
