Qualitative interviews with 12 emergency nurses identified 5 thematic categories impacting ACS response times, including up to 30-minute ECG report delays and lack of care monitoring strategies.
Why the study?
The factors influencing response times for care provided to patients with acute coronary syndrome in the hospital context needed to be analyzed.
This qualitative study identifies critical structural, staffing, and organizational barriers—such as emergency department overcrowding, lack of catheterization facilities, and absence of care auditing—that contribute to delayed response times for acute coronary syndrome care in a Brazilian hospital.
Protocol adherence alone may not suffice for optimal ACS times; leaves open the role of integrated monitoring systems in emergency care.
Objective To analyze the factors influencing response times for care provided to patients with acute coronary syndrome in the hospital context. Methods A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews following the COREQ Protocol. The research was conducted in person from May to June 2023 with twelve nurses working in the emergency department of a highly complex hospital located in the interior of Bahia. The data were organized using N-Vivo 14 software, categorized according to the Ishikawa Diagram, and analyzed using Minayo’s Thematic Content Analysis. Results The analysis yielded five categories, addressing protocols and algorithms of the study’s methodology; causes stemming from the technologies and materials used in patient care; factors related to the healthcare professionals; the absence of a strategy for supervising, monitoring, and evaluating care; and causes related to the human resources and physical infrastructure of the institution under study. Conclusion Although the interviewees follow protocols for ACS victims, they neglect aspects of the healthcare network, the healthcare system, and its policies, thereby revealing their main weaknesses.
