Key result
Meta-analysis evaluates complication rates of leadless versus transvenous single-chamber pacemakers in elderly patients.
Why the study?
This study was conducted to compare outcomes of leadless versus conventional transvenous single-chamber pacemakers in elderly patients receiving a permanent pacemaker for bradyarrhythmia.
Meta-Analysis
Comparable short-term outcomes in elderly patients; leaves open whether leadless pacemakers confer meaningful benefits pending randomized trials.
Systematic review and meta-analysis comparing leadless versus transvenous single-chamber pacemakers in elderly patients (study-defined elderly cohorts: ≥65, ≥80, or ≥85 years). Population: Elderly patients receiving a permanent single-chamber pacemaker for bradyarrhythmia. Intervention: Leadless pacemaker (Micra VR/AV, Aveir VR). Comparator: Conventional transvenous single-chamber pacemaker (TV-VVI). Design: Comparative observational studies only. Primary outcome: Overall device- or procedure-related complications. Secondary outcomes: All-cause mortality, device/lead dislodgement, pericardial effusion/tamponade, and procedure time. Methods follow PRISMA 2020. Databases searched: PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar to 22 October 2026. Risk of bias: Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Synthesis: DerSimonian-Laird random-effects model. Author: Muhammad Hamza Iqbal, Services Institute of Medical Sciences, Lahore, Pakistan. Target journal: Cureus.

Muhammad Hamza Iqbal (2026) conducted a meta-analysis in Bradyarrhythmia. Leadless pacemaker (Micra VR/AV, Aveir VR) vs. Conventional transvenous single-chamber pacemaker (TV-VVI) was evaluated on Overall device- or procedure-related complications. Leadless pacemakers were compared with conventional transvenous single-chamber pacemakers in elderly patients ≥65 years; no quantitative results were reported in the protocol abstract.
