Changes in educational systems aimed at fostering a knowledge-based society present a challenge for education. These transformations give rise to a vision of a different, modern form of education designed to prepare teachers to act as reflective practitioners and active agents who continuously update their knowledge and skills. Consequently, there is a need for entirely new competencies that enable teachers to function effectively in educating successive generations. Today, these competencies constitute an indispensable asset in a teacher’s work and determine their capacity for effective action. Given the significant variations in the conceptualization and interpretation of the term "competence" found in pedagogical literature, it is worthwhile to present various definitions and classifications of the concept.
