Liberal democracy serves as a major vehicle to achieve peaceful coexistence within a diverse society, fostering economic growth, individual freedoms, the restoration of human rights, the rule of law, and the promotion of healthy competition in global socio-political engagements. This has led to a strong desire for democratic consolidation, particularly in societies like ours that have faced dictatorship for extended periods. The significance of liberal ideology in governance and societal organization cannot be overstated, especially in the context of Nigeria’s democracy, as it provides a roadmap for societal structure and advancement. Regrettably, democracy in Nigeria is fraught with issues and is threatened by both internal and external factors, including ethnic tensions, corruption, and foreign interference. This paper presents a conceptual review of liberal ideology and democracy in Nigeria. To achieve the research objectives, a qualitative research methodology was adopted; thus, data were collected from secondary sources and analyzed through content analysis. Secondary data were sourced from academic journals, government publications, newspapers, and magazines. The findings reveal that the establishment and maintenance of liberal democracy in Nigeria is fundamentally flawed, even after a century of its existence as a political entity. The study identifies several factors that threaten the progress of Nigerian democracy, including the paradoxical nature of politics, where elections are contested and won based on the prevailing challenges faced by the populace, political parties operate independently without any coherent political ideologies, and primordial loyalties overshadow national allegiances. Moreover, the current government tends to represent and protect the interests of a select few, while the needs of the majority remain overlooked, among other issues. This paper, however, concludes that although the implementation of liberal democracy in Nigeria may fall short of expectations, it is important to recognize that democracy is not a static outcome but rather an evolving process. There is still hope, as the aspiration for genuine democratic practices among Nigerians is strong. Consequently, this study recommends that it is both timely and essential to make significant and coordinated efforts to establish inclusive, transparent, and effective democratic governance institutions that ensure the election of accountable leaders through free and fair elections.
