This paper describes a new Melo from western Cape York Peninsula, Queensland and eastern Indonesia. Melo cantamessai n. sp. is described using morphology and differs from the three known Melo from Queensland and the Northern Territory that possess spines that extend to the outer lip, Melo darwinensis, Melo peterstimpsoni, and Melo umbilicatus. The new species is known from near-shore shallow waters and intertidal estuarine systems with sandy mud substrates. In this paper, we present a new hypothesis that adds to previous papers that aim to explore the biogeographical zonation and diversity of Melo in Australia.
