The adoption of generative AI by micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) is increasingly seen as an opportunity to improve performance, yet findings remain mixed and evidence linking it to financial literacy is very limited. This narrative review aims to explain how the literature interprets the relationship between generative AI adoption and MSME performance in Indonesia, and which conditions determine the size of its impact. Sources were purposively gathered through web search engines and journal publisher websites for 2023–2026, with classical theories serving as the conceptual foundation, and 24 sources were synthesized thematically into five themes. The synthesis shows that generative AI tends to be associated with better decision quality, whereas its effect on overall business performance is conditional on strategic readiness, digital literacy, organizational capability, governance, and perceived risk. Financial literacy is consistently associated with MSME performance, but its interaction with generative AI has not been tested directly. The review suggests that businesses begin adoption from readiness rather than usage intensity, and that future research jointly test generative AI, readiness, and financial literacy using measurable performance indicators.
