Two new U(VI) oxyfluorides (C5H6N)U2O4F5 (AU2-4) and (C3H5N2)U2O4F5·1.75H2O (AU2-5) have been prepared through explorations of the UO2(C2H3O2)2/HF/pyridine and UO3/HF/pyrazole systems at 180 °C for 72 h in aqueous media. AU2-4 and AU2-5 are two-dimensional compounds containing structurally isomeric [U2O4F5]1- layers formed from [UO2F5] pentagonal bipyramids. [UO2F3]1- one-dimensional chains can be derived from these structures through the addition of fluoride, providing the first examples of dimensional reduction in organically templated actinide chemistry where the fundamental building block is unchanged.
