This study aims to understand the transformation of settlement spaces and socio-economic dynamics in tandem with the development of tourism in Ngaglik Sub-district, Batu City. Known as an agropolitan area, Batu has transformed into a national tourist destination in East Java. Tourism is regarded as a strategic sector that drives regional economic growth; however, its development has also brought about changes to the spatial structure and community activities. The research employed a qualitative method using a case study approach and was conducted between January and May 2026. Eight informants were selected through purposive sampling, comprising both native residents and migrants. Data were collected through ten in-depth interviews, five non-participatory observations, and documentation. The analysis was carried out through data condensation, data presentation, and the drawing and verification of conclusions, with triangulation of sources to check the validity of the data. The research findings indicate that, in spatial practice, transformation is evident through the conversion of agricultural land into residential areas, the densification of settlements, and the use of land and buildings for tourist accommodation. Meanwhile, through representations of space, the government’s spatial planning guidelines encompass residential, commercial and tourism-supporting functions. Meanwhile, in terms of representational spaces, changes are evident in patterns of interaction, experiences of building social relationships and attachment to the environment, as well as residents’ comfort in inhabiting the settlement space. These findings indicate that the transformation of Ngaglik’s settlement space occurs through the interplay between spatial use practices, planning directives and the community’s lived experiences, alongside economic opportunities and pressures on comfort that are experienced differently by residents.
