AbstractHeavy oil and bitumen resources constitute a significant proportion of the world’s petroleum reserves; however, their high viscosity and poor mobility present substantial challenges for conventional production methods. Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) has emerged as one of the most effective thermal enhanced oil recovery technologies for economically producing deep heavy oil and bitumen reservoirs. This study presents a comprehensive literature review of SAGD technology, focusing on its technological evolution, operating principles, current engineering challenges, and future research directions. A structured literature review methodology was adopted through the systematic evaluation of peer-reviewed publications addressing SAGD fundamentals, reservoir heterogeneity, steam chamber development, steam-to-oil ratio (SOR), solvent-assisted recovery, environmental sustainability, numerical simulation, and production optimization. The review demonstrates that the successful implementation of SAGD depends on the integrated interaction of reservoir characteristics, thermal recovery mechanisms, operational parameters, and technological innovation rather than any single engineering factor. Recent research highlights significant progress in solvent-assisted SAGD technologies, advanced numerical simulation, intelligent production optimization, and low-carbon recovery strategies aimed at improving oil recovery while reducing steam consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Despite these advances, challenges associated with geological uncertainty, environmental performance, and large-scale field validation remain important barriers to further technological development. The findings indicate that future progress in SAGD will depend on multidisciplinary approaches integrating advanced reservoir characterization, digital engineering technologies, production optimization, and sustainable development strategies. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of current knowledge while identifying key research gaps and engineering opportunities that can support the continued advancement of efficient, economically viable, and environmentally responsible heavy oil production.
