Interhalogen and polyinterhalogen compounds (IAPCs) have long represented a focal point in halogen chemistry. Recently, with the growing application of interhalogen chemistry in halogen ion battery (HIB) systems, increased attention has been drawn to their unique electrochemical merits and potential to advance battery design. This article discusses the correlation between the electrochemical mechanisms and properties of IAPCs, as well as their current applications in halogen batteries. We first elucidate the fundamental electrochemical mechanisms underlying IAPCs. We then categorize and discuss the applications of various types of IAPCs in halogen batteries. Finally, we offer perspectives on the existing challenges in integrating interhalogen chemistry into battery design and highlight promising prospects for the practical use of novel IAPC materials.
