This paper considers selected works by Black and South Asian British artists active in the mid-1980s, and assesses how each engaged with ideas of house, home, and homeland. Bearing witness to atrocities at home, Said Adrus, Al-An deSouza, Tam Joseph, Keith Piper, Donald Rodney and Marlene Smith narrated and reflected on the exclusionary political rhetoric and racist violence of the times: in an era of arson attacks and police brutality, for many Black and Brown families, home was a site of neither safety nor security.
