A crystallographic study of pyridoxine salts, combined with a survey of ortho-hydroxymethyl-hydroxy arenes and heteroarenes in the Cambridge Structural Database, was used to evaluate the persistence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding in crystalline ortho-hydroxymethyl-hydroxy (hetero)arenes. The presented analyses suggest that steric effects play a significant role in the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds in this class of compounds.
