This theoretical paper examines how educational leaders can leverage generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) for equity-focused school and district improvement. Although prior improvement leadership research connects equity-focused leadership, improvement science, and workplace culture (Shepard, 2026), AI use in education remains largely focused on individual use, leaving less understood about what changes when GenAI becomes part of an improvement team. Drawing on equity-focused leadership, improvement science, workplace culture, and human-AI teaming, the paper introduces the Human-AI Team Improvement Framework. The framework centers equity-focused collaborative continuous improvement and identifies three interdependent leadership conditions (co-inquiry, empowered ownership, and courageous safety) that support humans and GenAI in working, learning, and improving together. The framework focuses attention on the leadership conditions needed for human-AI teams to work and learn together in improvement. It suggests that GenAI may help teams address immediate problems while also building their capacity to inquire, learn, and improve. The paper concludes with implications for educational leaders and directions for research on human-AI improvement teams in practice.
