The Kukruse hoard, discovered in 2025, contains 170 silver coins and several silver artefacts. The youngest coin is a denar of Duke Henry V of Bavaria (1018–1026) struck in Regensburg, indicating that the hoard was assembled after 1018, though probably not much later. The composition of the hoard reflects the transition in northern Europe from the circulation of Islamic silver to western European coinage during the late 10th and early 11th centuries. Unlike many contemporary Scandinavian and Estonian hoards dominated by Anglo-Saxon coins, the Kukruse hoard is overwhelmingly composed of German denars, suggesting that most of its silver reached it directly from the Holy Roman Empire rather than through Scandinavian mediation. Besides coins, the hoard contained several silver objects, including a large penannular brooch with faceted terminals and a granulated silver bead. The hoard belongs to a broader concentration of Viking-Age silver hoards in Ida-Viru County, likely connected to trading networks associated with the harbour site near the mouth of the Toila River.
