The skill required to learn a new language is speaking. Speaking is the ability to communicate fluently, which requires not only an understanding of the language’s characteristics but also the ability to process information and language in real time. The researcher involved eleventh-grade students at one of the state senior high schools in Sidoarjo, East Java as research subjects. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of using ChatGPT’s voice mode in improving speaking skills. This study employed a quasi-experimental design in which the researcher divided the participants into two groups: an experimental group and a control group. Pre-tests and post-tests were used to collect data. The data were analyzed using an independent samples T-test, as the researcher compared the experimental and control group by calculating the mean scores of the pre-tests and post-tests for both groups. The research findings indicated that the mean scores of each group increased, but the mean score of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group. The results also indicated an improvement in students’ speaking skills in both the experimental and control groups, with the experimental group showing a significantly greater improvement than the control group. The conclusion of this study is that using the ChatGPT AI chatbot in voice mode can help improve students' speaking skills. ChatGPT is highly effective in helping to improve speaking skills because it is an LLM-based AI model capable of communicating by mimicking human language.
