Industry 4.0 has brought about a paradigm shift of global production systems from traditional manufacturing to highly automated ecosystems. The pièce de résistance of this evolution is the "Dark Factory" or "Lights-Out Manufacturing", which refers to a production facility that is designed to run unattended with little to no human intervention throughout the entire process. This study investigates in the secondary data collected from industry reports, academic literature and corporate case studies contexts of dark factories technological framework, their economic potential and scalable operating aspects. Analysis uses data from 2013 to October 2025. Results indicate that fully dark factories remain a niche implementation limited mostly to high volume, high precision industries; however, "semi-dark" environments are being established based on the advances of Artificial intelligence (AI), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and advanced robotics. The study comes to the conclusion that, continuous uninterrupted production and low variable overheads cost providing the massive economic benefits to the manufacturing industries. But at the same time the management must overcome the major challenges related to the cyber vulnerabilities, large initial investments and the socioeconomic effects of workforce relocation.
