This article is based on the written responses of Karen Mundy and António Nóvoa to the questions of the guest editors of the Special Section ‘Global Governance and the Status of Teachers as a Profession’, as well as an online follow-up discussion with the two scholars. The main themes included the continued relevance of the 1966 ILO-UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, in light of the changes in the field of global geopolitics and education governance, the role of civil society and the renewal of the social contract for education, as well as challenges facing the teaching profession, not least those posed by the surge of artificial intelligence.
