Starting in the mid-1970s and continuing for another 15 years, Xerox PARC and Bell Laboratories created Electronic Design Automation (EDA) systems for digital hardware system design. Although nearly 3000 miles from each other, they created software systems that in many ways depending on the same set of principles. In this paper, the two EDA environments will be described, compared, and contrasted to illustrate how a common philosophy can influence the design of Computer-Aided Design tools.
