Objective To identify the state of the scientific literature regarding factors associated with intention to leave the job and nursing profession in South American countries. Methods This is an integrative review based on Whittemore & Knafl framework, which includes studies from CINAHL, LILACS, MEDLINE, SciELO and Scopus, using terms related to intention to leave, turnover intention, and nursing. Results twenty-two (n=22) scientific articles were included. Factors influencing intention to leave included work-related, health-related, and personal aspects. Work-related factors were the most cited. A lack of studies on the topic, particularly representing some South American countries and Brazilian regions, was noted, highlighting the need for future research in this area. Conclusion The factors influencing intention to leave vary, but often include work-related factors, revealing the “intention to leave” as a possible indicator of the need for strategies to improve working conditions.
