Key result
Farming or informal labor linked to ~2.1-fold higher odds of poor cardiovascular prevention knowledge.
Why the study?
This study aimed to describe the knowledge regarding stroke and MI prevention and identify its associated factors among hypertensive patients at An Lao General Hospital in Hai Phong City, Vietnam.
Cross-Sectional (n=267)
No
Although 87.6% of hypertensive patients in this Vietnamese hospital had adequate overall knowledge of stroke and MI prevention, critical gaps remained in lifestyle prevention (diet and exercise) and disease management, particularly among farmers and informal workers.
Targeted education for farmers and informal laborers may address disparities; cross-sectional data leaves open effects on stroke or MI incidence.
Objective: To describe the knowledge regarding the prevention of stroke and myocardial infarction (MI) and to identify its associated factors among patients with hypertension at An Lao General Hospital, Hai Phong City, Vietnam in 2025. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 267 hypertensive patients at An Lao General Hospital, Hai Phong City, Vietnam, from March to June 2025. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire adapted from the validated Stroke Knowledge Test and the Knowledge on Prevention of Myocardial Infarction instrument. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify independent predictors of adequate preventive knowledge, with statistical significance established at p < 0.05. Results: Patients had adequate knowledge about stroke and myocardial infarction prevention was 87.6%. Patients working as farmers or in informal labor had significantly lower levels of knowledge regarding stroke and myocardial infarction prevention than those who were government employees, office staff, industrial workers, or retirees (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Patients with hypertension had gaps in their knowledge of stroke and myocardial infarction prevention. The hospital should develop a health education plan for patients with hypertension.

Doan et al. (2026) conducted a cross-sectional in Hypertension (n=267). Occupation as farmers and informal workers vs. Civil servants, industrial workers, and retirees was evaluated on Inadequate knowledge of stroke and myocardial infarction prevention (overall score <49 out of 70) (OR 2.12, 95% CI 0.19-23.2, p=0.024). Among hypertensive patients, 87.6% had adequate stroke and MI prevention knowledge, with farming or informal labor significantly associated with inadequate knowledge (adjusted OR 2.12, p=0.024).
