Solai Sundaraperumal is one of the notable writers in modern Tamil literature who has documented social realism, the lives of marginalized people, and the subtle movements of human emotions within a rural setting. His novella Uranga Marantha Kumbakarnangal (Manasu), set in the village of Navalankudi, realistically portrays human weaknesses, mental health issues, class struggles, complexities in family relationships, and social awareness. This research article provides an in-depth analysis of the characterization of the major characters in the novella, namely Chinnasamy, Thangam, Appunu, Sevathi, Maruthayi, and Rajamani. Furthermore, it examines the author’s expression of social responsibility, parent-child relationships, societal attitudes towards persons with disabilities, feminist perspectives, and rural development through these characters. The study explores these themes from literary and sociological perspectives, highlighting the author’s concern for marginalized communities and the social realities of rural life.
