Varna (skin color and complexion) is an important diagnostic and prognostic factor in Ayurveda, extending beyond pigmentation to radiance, lustre, and vitality. But with the concept of Garbha Varna Utpatti (origin of fetal skin color) described by Acharya Charaka, Sushruta, Kashyapa, and others, specifying and attributing skin color to Panchamahabhuta, Shukra-Shonita, maternal diet, regimen, psychological state, and hereditary factors. Classical treatises also highlight hereditary and spiritual determinants (Beeja, Beejabhaga, Piturja, Matruja, Atmaja, Satmyaja bhava). Contemporary science explains skin pigmentation primarily through melanogenesis, genetic regulation, embryological skin development, and environmental influences. This article attempts to understand Ayurveda concepts with embryology, biochemistry, and genetics, thereby presenting an integrative framework for understanding of fetal skin color and identify areas for further research. Understanding Garbha Varna Utpatti through both Ayurveda and modern science also provides opportunities for integrative approaches to maternal-fetal care (maternal care, fetal dermatology, and Ayurvedic nutrigenomics).
