This research analyzes the stereotypical construction of characters represented as Black and African in two widely circulated publications. During the period considered the golden age of comics (1962–1975): Condorito and Mampato. The analysis relates these racial representations to stereotypes that emerged during the enslavement of African populations and European colonialism in Africa, visual repertoires that circulated throughout Western graphic, print, and visual culture. Through a comparative analysis, the study identifies a divergence in the forms of racial representation in both publications. While Condorito reproduces visual conventions inherited from a colonial and racialized tradition, Mampato introduces counter-hegemonic strategies that challenge and, in some cases, destabilize these stereotypes from within the representational framework of the comics themselves as visual narratives.
