Literary Theoretical Concepts in Umberto Eco Critical Writings The Open Work Interpretation and Textual Intentionality

This study examines the principal concepts informing literary theory in the critical writings of Umberto Eco, with particular emphasis on the open work, interpretation and overinterpretation, and the intentionality of the author, text, and reader. It aims to identify the theoretical foundations of these concepts, explain their role in the production of literary meaning, and trace their influence on modern and contemporary literary criticism. Adopting an analytical and interpretive approach, the study explores Eco’s understanding of the literary text as a dynamic structure that permits multiple readings while remaining governed by its internal coherence and interpretive limits. It also considers the active role assigned to the reader in actualizing textual possibilities and distinguishes legitimate interpretation from readings that disregard textual evidence. The study demonstrates that Eco’s theory establishes a balance between interpretive openness and textual constraint: meaning is neither determined exclusively by authorial intention nor left entirely to the reader’s unrestricted subjectivity. Instead, it emerges through an interaction among textual strategies, reader competence, and cultural knowledge. The study further argues that Eco’s concepts contributed to the development of reception theory, semiotic approaches to reading, and debates surrounding deconstruction. It concludes that Eco offers a flexible yet disciplined framework for understanding literary interpretation and the plurality of meaning. ----------------------------------------- مقولات نظرية الأدب في كتابات أمبرتو إيكو النقدية الأثر المفتوح والتأويل والقصدية النصية مريم ماجد ثامر *1 1كلية التربية، جامعة القادسية، ديوانية، العراق الملخص تتناول هذه الدراسة أبرز المقولات المؤسسة لنظرية الأدب في الكتابات النقدية لأمبرتو إيكو، مع التركيز على الأثر المفتوح، والتأويل والتأويل المفرط، وقصديات المؤلف والنص والقارئ. وتهدف إلى تحديد المرتكزات النظرية التي تقوم عليها هذه المقولات، وبيان دورها في إنتاج المعنى الأدبي، وتتبع أثرها في النقد الأدبي الحديث والمعاصر. وتعتمد الدراسة المنهج التحليلي التأويلي للكشف عن تصور إيكو للنص الأدبي بوصفه بنية دينامية تتيح تعدد القراءات، من دون أن تتخلى عن تماسكها الداخلي أو حدودها التأويلية. كما تبحث في الدور الفاعل الذي يؤديه القارئ في تحقيق الإمكانات الدلالية للنص، وتوضح الفارق بين التأويل المشروع والتأويل المفرط الذي يتجاوز الشواهد النصية وضوابطها. وتبين الدراسة أن نظرية إيكو تقيم توازناً بين انفتاح النص والقيود التي تفرضها بنيته؛ فالمعنى لا تحدده قصدية المؤلف وحدها، كما أنه لا يخضع خضوعاً مطلقاً لذاتية القارئ، وإنما يتشكل من خلال التفاعل بين استراتيجيات النص وكفاءة القارئ ومعرفته الثقافية. وتخلص الدراسة إلى أن مقولات إيكو أسهمت في تطوير نظرية التلقي، وسيميائيات القراءة، والنقاشات المتصلة بالتفكيكية، وقدمت إطاراً نقدياً مرناً ومنضبطاً لفهم التأويل الأدبي وتعدد المعنى. الكلمات المفتاحية: أمبرتو إيكو، نظرية الأدب، الأثر المفتوح، التأويل، القصدية، نظرية التلقي. -----------------------------------------
